Chapter 25

Bernie’s eyes widened. “Wow.”

She was stunned. So for that matter was Libby, who wondered if she’d heard right. When she looked at her sister she could see Bernie was thinking the same thing.

“Why would Jeremy do something like that?” Libby asked after a couple of seconds had elapsed.

“Why?” Lisa repeated. Her voice rose slightly. “What do you mean why? It’s obvious.”

“Not to us,” Bernie said, pointing to herself and her sister.

“Because I told him to.” Lisa slowed down her speech as if she was talking to a four-year-old. “Jeremy and I discussed it and we both came to the same conclusion. We thought that what Ellen was about to do was wrong and we thought that Bruce should have a heads-up. I know he tends to be a little on the . . . bossy side . . . but he’s going through a rough time now and the last thing he needed was something like this.”

Libby shifted her weight to her other foot. “So how did Bruce react when Jeremy told him?”

“Jeremy said he was pissed. Wouldn’t you be?”

“For sure,” Bernie answered. “Did he say anything?”

“Jeremy said Bruce told him that he was going to teach Ellen a lesson she’d never forget.”

“Well, Bruce certainly managed to accomplish that with Manny,” Bernie observed.

“Don’t be ridiculous,” Lisa shot back. “Bruce would never do something like that. Cut off Ellen’s credit cards, yes; kill someone and leave their body on the bed for her to find? No. Absolutely not. We’re not talking about the Mafia here.”

Bernie shrugged. “I don’t know. Maybe Manny and Ellen were having an affair and Bruce found out and, as you said, decided to teach Ellen a lesson.”

“Ellen and Manny an item?” Lisa scoffed. “No way. She doesn’t like beards or tattoos or men with earrings. They’re a turnoff to her. She’s a total prep when it comes to guys. You know that.”

“Except for Damion,” said Bernie. “The professional wrestler.”

“I’d forgotten about him,” Lisa admitted.

“She was with him for a couple of months.”

“I don’t think it was that long,” Lisa said.

Bernie was about to reply when Libby jumped into the conversation. “You’re missing the point,” she said to Lisa. “The point is that whoever killed Manny and planted him in the bed had to have known that Ellen had left the room.”

“If Ellen’s telling the truth,” Lisa said.

“We’re assuming she is,” Bernie informed her.

“Fine then,” Lisa said. “Maybe putting Manny there was a totally random act.”

“And maybe,” Bernie said, “there really is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and the cow jumped over the moon.”

Lisa glared at Bernie. “So you’re suggesting it wasn’t?”

Bernie nodded. “That I am.”

Lisa put her hand up to her throat. “But that would mean that Manny was killed by someone who knew where Ellen was and wanted to frame her,” Lisa protested in an amazed tone of voice.

Bernie managed to keep herself from saying, I’m shocked, simply shocked and appalled. Instead she said, “Exactly. That’s the assumption we’re working on.
